In Your Element
The Press Hotel
119 Exchange Street | (207) 808-8800
Landing at this masterfully realized hotel concept after a week spent in the cozy austerity of country life was something out of a dream. Housed in the former Portland Press Herald building, the abode oozes writerly charm, deftly weaving spirited quotes, newsroom decor and artist community installations with all the trappings you’d wish for in a luxury hotel. The rooms take a page from 1920s writer’s offices with their tweeds and herringbones, but the bathrooms are pure modern bliss. Their heart-of-the-city location encouraged pavement pounding, while central hub The Inkwell Bar with its morning coffees and evening tipple inspired a reporter’s state of mind for researching our Portland story.
The Danforth Inn
163 Danforth Street | (207) 879-8755
Under the tasteful new management of midcoast Maine’s Camden Harbour Inn, The Danforth’s historic glory days are commencing a second act. The grand brick facade gives way to nine distinctive guest rooms, while private gardens and inventive Southeast Asian cuisine from in-house restaurant Tempo Dulu sweeten the Inn’s unique appeal. It’s an intimate and endearing stay.
